Messenger for Mac will continue to be a free download for Mac users that want to access their Windows Live network of contacts. The focus of our team will continue to be features that extend the productivity of Windows Live users who use Office applications. Features that fall outside of that mission, such as games or winks, are not likely to be supported.

Communicator for Mac will be available to organizations that use the Office Communications Server. These enterprises, companies and education organizations will provide Communicator for Mac to their users as part of Office 2011. (Communicator for Mac will be available to volume licensing customers only.)

Remote Access for OCS : EDGE Server vs VPN

OCS Has built in mechanisms to publish the OCS Environment to the internet, the OCS EDGE Server provides those functionalities. While many companies rely on VPN they often do not see the added value of what an EDGE Server can bring to the table.

Let’s compare Remote Access :

Remote Access is provided by the OCS EDGE server

Eliminates the need to use VPN for OCS Access, It’s transparant for the End-Users because they don’t have to start their VPN connection before Communicator can be used. Automatic logon is performed whether you connect from the LAN or from the Internet.
It enables federation with Business (they also require OCS with EDGE)
It enables federation with Public IM providers such as Windows Live, Yahoo & AOL
The Windows Mobile OC Client also connects through the EDGE Server
It enables the use of Live Meeting externally and makes it possible to use anonymous meetings so that customers & others can join meetings as well

Remote Access is provided through VPN

No EDGE required
Does not always work as expected. In most cases VPN endpoints cannot do Peer to Peer calls – no routing of VPN clients. Additionally an EDGE Server can solve these issues for VPN Users.
It’s Not transparant to End-Users
There is additional overhead for VPN tunnel and does not optimize the use of the Microsoft codec
If there is a requirement for 2 Factor Authentication then VPN solution is the only way to go but you can still use the EDGE Server for other features

Communicator Mobile 2007 R2

Issues that this hotfix package fixes

Provides home screen support for new home screens in Windows Mobile 6.5+ phones.
Provides integration within the phone dialer for Windows Mobile 6.5+ phones.
Enables Communicator Mobile 2007 R2 to recognize when the phone is roaming and by default prevents Communicator Mobile 2007 R2 from signing in to roaming networks.
Provides additional support for joining conference calls from a Windows Mobile appointment. To do this, press Menu, and then press Join Conference.
Lets users log on by using a user name in the user@example.com format, in addition to the domain\user format.
Enables the functionality by which callbacks are now automatically accepted when the user uses the Call via Work option.
Resolves the problem in which the Microsoft Installer (.msi) installation fails on a Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)-based computer. In this situation, users should install Communicator Mobile 2007 R2 by using a (.cab) installation.
Fixes the problem in which AT&T FUZE devices that are set for a High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) connection cannot handle voice and data at the same time. In this situation, calls that use the Call via Work option fail unless the device is reverted to 3rd Generation (3G) by disabling HSDPA.
End User License Agreement (EULA) update to allow OEMs pre-install Communicator Mobile 2007 R2 in addition to Standalone Web downloads.
